STIFF PERSON SYNDROME
A one in a million disease!
Stiff Person Syndrome is a very rare, autoimmune disease that affects 1 out of every 1 million people. Unfortunately, there's not a lot of information about it. This website, in conjunction with Facebook and Instagram, is designed to provide information as it comes in, which is at a trickle, not a deluge, but may include a potential cure
Just under 100 days ago, (today is July 2nd), I received a bone marrow and stem cell transplant at the VA Hospital in Puget Sound, Washington. I'm a US Navy veteran so that worked out well for me. The head of the Marrow Transplant Unit, Dr. Chauncy and his excellent team had done hundreds of these transplants for cancer patients, but zero for anyone with an autoimmune disease. I was their patient #1. Kind of a scary situation, but not scarier than living the rest of my live with Stiff Person Syndrome. I went in with a wheelchair and a walker, and today, about 95 days after my transplant, I walked a 3.5 mile trail with a 1300 foot incline. I'm inclined to believe that the treatment worked but I'm willing to give it more time. No more walker. No more wheelchair. Just continuing to work on my balance and get better. Will I stay better? I don't know, but I feel like I will.
